The Negotiation

There’s a moment in every complex relationship when the conversation turns toward rules.

Not the obvious ones — fidelity, honesty, kindness. Those are easy. People tend to agree on those in theory.

The more interesting rules are the ones that appear once a system expands.

Who has authority in which situations. Who gets the final say when priorities conflict. How time, attention, and emotional labor will be distributed.

In theory, negotiated systems are supposed to make these questions easier. The premise is simple: if everyone states their needs clearly enough, the resulting structure will feel fair to everyone involved.

In practice, negotiation has an interesting side effect.

It formalizes power.

Once a structure is written down — even casually — people begin orienting themselves around it.

I remember sitting in conversations where dynamics were described in almost architectural terms. Roles were discussed. Boundaries were sketched out. Responsibilities were assigned.

Some of the language sounded surprisingly formal.

Dominance. Submission. Authority.

None of those words felt threatening at the time. In certain communities they’re treated almost like design principles — tools for shaping the emotional architecture of relationships.

And like any architecture, they work best when everyone involved feels structurally supported.

But buildings have load-bearing walls.

Once a wall is designated as load-bearing, the entire structure begins depending on it.

The question no one asked — or perhaps didn’t know how to ask — was whether everyone in the system had equal influence over which walls became structural.

Because the moment one person’s authority becomes central to the design, the incentives shift.

Some people become architects.

Others become… infrastructure.

I didn’t recognize that shift immediately.

At the time it all felt collaborative.

After all, if everyone had agreed to the structure, how could it be anything else?

Only later did I begin to understand something subtle about agreements.

You can consent to a structure without fully understanding how it will redistribute gravity once people start living inside it.
