Raindrops

Someone once sent me a card with two figures walking together beneath an umbrella.

Raindrops. Take a chance on them.

I’ve been thinking about that card more than I expected to.

Rain has always been an interesting metaphor for relationships. It’s the sort of weather that can either feel romantic or inconvenient depending on how prepared you are. If you have an umbrella and good company, rain becomes atmospheric. If you don’t, it becomes something to endure.

I think many of us want to believe love works the same way.

That if two people simply choose to walk through the rain together, the storm itself becomes beautiful.

But storms are rarely symmetrical.

Sometimes one person brought the umbrella. Sometimes the other person thought the clouds would pass.

And sometimes the rain itself wasn’t the problem at all.

Sometimes the problem was that both people believed they were the one holding the umbrella.
